The new kitchen cabinet trend is to use open cabinets or shelves as uppers rather than the traditional cabinet. This new (old) style allows for a more simplistic look and adds character and depth to your kitchen. You can go for the rustic, traditional or the very modern. The great thing about shelving . . . there are so many CHOICES, from the simple IKEA shelf, to the more do-it-yourself repurposed shelf and brackets.

If you are planning on doing a remodel to your existing kitchen and using your current uppers, here is where some skill at sanding and painting will come in handy. Using a different background like wall paper, fabric or a different color paint in the back of the cabinet will help create depth and really make those special items pop! It’s always nice to keep a few cabinets with doors to hide the “ugly” stuff.

INSIDE TIP: Just remember to keep the proper distance above a range when installing shelves over or close to a range top. The industry standard is 30” from your cooking surface.
