Want to be completely prepared to personalize your new home in Design Appointment #2? Here are some easy steps you can take beforehand:

Consider what says “home” to you

Take a few minutes to really think about what details turn a house into a home for you and your family. You might want to walk through your current home with a clipboard in hand, listing particular furnishings and objects that will move to your new home with you. Make note of colors and styles for later reference. You might even want to measure some pieces.

Consider your lifestyle

Think about your family’s daily activities – both as a group, and individually. Ask yourself what changes you expect in the next 5 to 10 years. As you think about each room, consider traffic, activities, and how your family likes to function. For example:

  • What hobbies or activities do you want to accommodate?
  • How do you celebrate holidays?
  • Do you entertain in a formal or informal style?
  • Do any family members have special needs?
  • Do you frequently have overnight guests?

With these details in mind, ask yourself what atmosphere you want to achieve in your new home – room by room. The room’s purpose and architecture might influence your answer.

  • Will the space be used for long hours or brief periods of time?
  • Who will use the space most often and at what time of day?
  • What is the focal point of the room or space?

Answering these questions can help you make good decisions when it comes to selecting features and finishes for all the most important spaces in your new home.
